RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
