Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
